LEVEL 2 AWARD IN MOT TESTING QUALIFICATION (CLASSES 4 AND 7)

Level 2 Award in MOT Testing (Classes 4 and 7) (Ofqual Ref: 60189356)


The DVSA has changed the way new MOT testers become qualified for testing status. All new MOT testers are now required to complete the Level 2 Award in MOT Testing for their relevant vehicle class.


The Level 2 Award in MOT Testing has been developed in collaboration with the DVSA to give candidates the knowledge and skills required to perform MOT tests to the required standard. Once passed, new MOT testers can apply to the DVSA for their Certificate of Competence and begin conducting MOT tests.


Level 2 Award in MOT Testing (Classes 4 and 7) are lifetime qualifications, which means that you will not need to renew your qualification. You will be considered professionally competent for the rest of your life. All MOT testers will, however, have to complete Annual Training and an Annual Assessment in order to maintain their testing status.


The Level 2 Award in MOT Testing (Classes 4 and 7) consists of 5 Modules


  • Safe working practices in Testing Centres

  • Working relationships within the Testing Centre

  • How to manage professional development as an MOT tester

  • How to carry out pre-test checks for a statutory periodic road worthiness test

  • How to carry out a statutory periodic road worthiness test.


Within the 29 guided learning hours, delivery of the qualification must include a minimum of eight hours practical training. With assistance, learners must complete an entire simulated, uninterrupted MOT test for the relevant vehicle class. The simulated MOT test must be carried out in a training environment that meets the DVSA’s standard requirements. This includes the MOT computer testing service system and assessment of all units in the qualification.


Candidates will also need to sit an externally set and externally marked examination which will test the knowledge they have gained from learning.


In order to take the Level 2 Award in MOT Testing (Classes 4 and 7), candidates must have:


A Level 3 Motor Vehicle qualification in servicing and repair.

No unspent convictions for criminal offences connected with the MOT testing scheme or the motor trade or involving acts of violence or intimidation.

Be 'of good repute'.

A current and full UK driving licence for the relevant vehicle class.

Four years full-time employment in servicing and repairing the type of vehicle to be tested.
